Under Daniel Burnham's direction, the World's Columbian Exposition overcame tremendous difficulties and logistical hurdles, including a global financial panic. Despite enormous architectural criticism of his work, the popularity of his brilliant "White City" continued to burn brightly in the public's imagination long after the fair closed. His designs and the publication of the Chicago Plan near the end of his career influenced urban planning across the world and throughout the 20th century, planting the seeds for Chicago's growth to become the capital of modern architecture and culture we know today.
